In the late 1970s, Don Zientara, a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, founded Inner Ear Studio in his Arlington, VA home's basement, utilizing electronics training from his time in the army. In 1990, Inner Ear relocated to a larger space on South Oakland Street, gaining fame for recording legendary DC punk acts like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Bikini Kill, Rites of Spring, Mary Timony, and Fugazi. "The Inner Ear of Don Zientara," curated by photographer Antonia Tricarico, presents an oral history of the studio and Don's pivotal role, complemented by 250 photos and testimonials from notable musicians. Don also recorded diverse genres, from Celtic folk to political ads, and featured on Dave Grohl's Sonic Highways series. This book pays homage to this iconic studio and its central figure, Don Zientara.
